AGING CREATIVELY IN THE 21st CENTURY

The “graying” of America is already a familiar concept to arts administrators, who are actively discussing the nationwide wave of emerging leadership that will occur in the next two decades as founders and senior staff of non-profits reach retirement age. This green paper represents the other side of the discussion about the generational shift—how will older adults remain creatively and actively engaged throughout their entire lifespan? And how will we capture the wisdom of our aging population to ensure that our collective knowledge base and culture is retained and passed on for the benefit of future generations?

Jennie Smith-Peers is currently the Executive Director of Elders Share the Arts, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to using art to empowering older adults to transform their lives through personal narrative.

After earning a BFA in Acting at Emerson College, and graduating from the NYU’s Drama Therapy Program, where she focused on the intersection of reminiscence, medicine, and the effects on geriatric mental health, Jennie has served as an intergenerational program coordinator and has developed programs for homebound older adults within New York City so that they could remain independent within their homes.

As the Executive Director of ESTA, she is committed to building capacity through collaborations, grass-roots organizing, and is fascinated by how different generations can use new media to relate to each other.  With all of that being said, she is passionate about exploring personal narratives older adults,  and expanding the notions of what it means to grow older within our world.

This year marks the first year that Americans over the age of 65 will outnumber those under the age of 20. The “graying” of America is already conversations that many arts administrators are familiar with, who are busy discussing how to deal with aging administrators and aging audiences.  Yet, what this green paper seeks to address is how do we as service providers include access to our arts programming for everyone? Traditional ways of doling out arts programming are no longer sufficient. Older adults need and desire quality arts programs that give them the opportunity to grow and be creative. What is holding us back from including elders? At the end of the day, I believe that it is ageism.

We are living in the 21st Century and though many strides have been made in the last 30 years to view aging in a more positive light our society continues to marginalize them, make many feel unwelcome, and forces them to be invisible. Read the rest of this entry »

I’m thrilled to be serving as an Ambassador for National Center for Creative Aging Green Paper on Aging Creatively in the 21st Century. It is my intention to use this paper as a catalyst for discussion around ideas of what it means to be creative as we grow older and the impact it has on our lives; and so, I welcome your comments, questions, and feedback.

My hope is that this dialogue will foster discussions around the latest ideas on aging and creativity, the challenges we face, and strategies to address and perhaps overcome these obstacles.

So dig in – read the paper, add to the discussion, and share with me your ideas of what it means to remain creatively engaged while growing older. What does it look like? How can we reinvent – with compassion, dignity, and creativity – the face of aging through the arts?
