Creating Change in Education

Posted by John Abodeely On September - 29 - 2008

Creating change in education is not only a function of affecting classroom practice. To impact education, one must know and then act upon the network of decision-makers that determine what a child experiences each day in the classroom. The first step is to understand the way these decisions are made and revised within the entire network of decision-makers. Read the rest of this entry »

Emergency Relief for the Arts

Posted by Jamie Boese On September - 26 - 2008

In response to the devastation in Texas and Louisiana due to recent hurricane activity, Americans for the Arts is collecting donations to its Emergency Relief Fund.

We received an update from Jonathon Glus of the Houston Arts Alliance with an overview of the damage that he is aware of from Hurricane Ike. This update is both enlightening and hopeful, though it is obvious that the impact of these storms will not fully be known or understood for some time. If you are among those affected by the recent hurricanes, please share your updates in the comments. Please also join us in sending good thoughts to our arts colleagues in Texas and Louisiana by contributing to the comments below. Read the rest of this entry »

ARTSblog Wants You!

Posted by Elizabeth Van Fleet On September - 19 - 2008

With the recent success of ‘guest’ bloggers for both the Annual Convention and the National Arts Marketing Project Conference, Americans for the Arts is now searching for members to volunteer as year-round arts bloggers. Selected arts bloggers will be expected to post something twice a month about arts issues that are affecting their communities and organizations and about arts issues of concern to them as individuals.

This program will create an open forum for the arts community, where bloggers can share their voices and engage bloggers and readers in a dialogue across the country. If you’re interested in becoming an arts blogger, e-mail gdunstan@artsusa.org with ARTSblog in the subject. Let us know your name, organization, job title and function, contact information, whether or not you have a blog or have blogged before, and a little bit about the kinds of topics you might want to discuss. Please submit your e-mail by Monday, September 29.

Task & You Shall Receive: Wisconsin's Forces for 21st Century Arts Education

Posted by John Abodeely On September - 16 - 2008

New, critical support for arts education is mounting from business, government, and education. Wisconsin leaders are capitalizing on these opportunities in unparalleled ways.

By Karin Wolf, Arts Program Administrator, Madison Arts Commission, City of Madison, Wisconsin

On a cool Wisconsin evening in early September, dozens upon dozens of people gathered at the Promega Corporation’s world headquarters in Fitchburg, WI, to honor a distinguished guest on the occasion of his 91st birthday. Promega Corporation has offices in 12 countries and is a worldwide leader in innovative biochemistry and molecular biology technology. Though their special visitor was someone who was carefully selected to be an inspiration to employees, he was not a famous scientist or leader in biotech sales. In fact, his success did rely on a finely tuned understanding of chemistry and a knack for business, but that is not why he was invited. Read the rest of this entry »

Arts Educators Reach Out to New Stars

Posted by Elizabeth Van Fleet On September - 11 - 2008

from Anne L’Ecuyer, Associate Vice President of Field Services

This news article from the St. Petersburg Times came across my desk this morning. It’s a quick read. Take a look:

Arts Educators Reach Out to New Stars

I like it because it does a few things all at once:

  • Puts the expertise and perspective of artists right up front
  • Describes the current state of arts education in several schools
  • Makes the connection between the creative practice and teaching
  • Promotes local arts events

And the writer still manages to get the factoids in at the bottom! I’m wondering, how might a story like this work in your media market? Any riffs on the theme? Maybe interview working artists about the economic impact of your local scene?

Hope this helps in some way!

Arts Education Trends: Universal Design for Learning and the Arts

Posted by John Abodeely On September - 10 - 2008

By guest blogger Don Glass, Ph.D., Director of Outcomes and Evaluation, VSA arts, Washington, D.C.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is getting a lot of airplay in Washington this Fall. In addition to several conferences and a virtual forum, the United States Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) just released a Tool Kit on Universal Design for Learning on the web.

The Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) defines Universal Design for Learning as, “…a framework for designing curricula that enable all individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning. UDL provides rich supports for learning and reduces barriers to the curriculum while maintaining high achievement standards for all.”

Why is UDL important for arts educators to get to know better?
