In my role as Vice Chair of the Emerging Leaders Council of Americans for the Arts, I spend a lot of time thinking about the “big picture” role of leadership and professional development in the arts, but a significant part of my day-to-day work at the Green Street Arts Center involves grassroots leadership—connecting and collaborating with underserved artists who have great ideas, but need Green Street’s assistance to realize them. These two hats (not mutually exclusive) brought me to this morning’s Leadership and Connectivity session.
Liz Dow presented some findings from Leadership Philadelphia’s 101 Connectors Project, which is identifying Philadelphia-area leaders who:
- May or may not already be in the public eye
- Know how to get things done
- Demonstrate concern for the “common good” in actions and attitudes
- Are trusted by their fellow citizens
The results were surprising (and will hopefully be made available to everyone after the convention).
Her co-presenter, Penelope Reed, led us through a series of exercises to address our own abilities as connectors and leaders.
Cynthia Cooper, Executive Director of the Fresno Coalition for Arts, Science & History, and Craig Dreeszen of Dreeszen & Associates, graciously agreed to be videotaped for the blog as they explored the Power of Connection.
