New Year, New Career Goals

New Year, New Goals
By now, you’ve probably made a few New Year’s resolutions: lose weight, quit smoking, or be more organized. But have you set career goals for 2008? Are you where you expected to be at this point in your career?
With the new year comes new insight and a fresh opportunity to reflect on where you’ve been and where you want to go. Peter Weddle, a leading expert in human resources, offers an idea called Career Fitness, described below.
Strengthen Your Career
Career Fitness is based on the philosophy that keeping a healthy career is similar to keeping a healthy body; both need to build more flexibility and reach. Two ways to do this are by:
1. Learning new skills that will enable you to take on a broader array of assignments in your current job, such as learning another language, making public presentations, or using a new software program.
2. Expanding the scope of your job beyond the limits defined in its official description to extend your (real and potential) contribution beyond what’s expected of you in the workplace.
